Best Time to Visit Brazil
The best time to enjoy the carnival, explore the Pantanal wetlands or the tropical Amazon rainforest...
Brazil is a huge country, so when to go depends completely on where you are aiming to go; and with pristine beaches, vibrant cities, stunning wetlands and wild jungles, you won't want to miss a thing!
When planning you trip, bear in mind that it is in the Southern hemisphere so their summers are in the northern hemisphere’s winters, a great time to take a winter break in a tropical climate! If you are aiming to come around carnival time (usually February/March), where the celebrations are not held only in Rio de Janeiro, but all over the country, make sure you book well in advance as prices go through the roof if you leave it late. Christmas here is a very family orientated affair and businesses may be closed on the day.
Climate: This depends entirely on whereabouts in this huge and predominantly tropical country you plan to be. Broadly speaking, Rio and the southern coastal areas are cooler in the southern hemisphere’s winter from June to September but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as they can get seriously steamy in the rest of the year.
If it’s the northeast beaches of Bahia that you’re headed for, try to avoid April to July as the rains usually come then, although only in short tropical bursts, so it may not be a total no-go.
The Pantanal’s distinct rainy (Dec-Mar) and dry (May-Oct) seasons have their relative advantages in terms of the species you’re likely to see, so please feel free to email us for further details on this.
The Amazon is hot and humid all year round, the dry season is between June and December and the wet is typically from December to May, although you can still expect nice clear mornings. There are heavy downpours most afternoons at this time, however due to the humidity these are quite welcome!
Carnival: Carnival time in Rio and Salvador (February/March, but pegged to Easter, so varies) is the highest of high seasons and needs booking well in advance – most hotels will impose minimum stays. Ditto New Year. The carnival in Rio de Janeiro is the annual celebration of life, bright elaborate costumes are worn by the numerous musicians and entertainers as they fill the streets with a rhythm, found only here.
Public Holidays:
New Years Day (Jan 01), Carnival (usually Feb or Mar), Easter, Tiradentes Day (Apr 21), Labour Day (May 01), Corpus Christi (usually in June), Independence Day (Sep 07), Our Lady of Apparition (Oct 12), All Soul’s Day (Nov 02), Proclamation of the Republic (Nov 15), Christmas Day (Dec 25)
